Dog Heaven - Mush Larose 2010
The weekend before last I had the opportunity to attend a very exciting event, the 2010 edition of the Mush Larose...If you have had chance to look at my pics over the last few years, you probably noticed that I am not a big fan of shooting photographs with people in them unless they are impromptu shots and the folks are not aware that they are being framed in my shots...you probably know by now that I like taking pictures of animals in their natural settings. What more natural than photographing sled dogs at a sled race...some dogs even like pulling their owners on cross country skis, something called "skijoring".
I know a few dogs for having watched over them at an Ottawa Humane Society fund raising event. Rocket, Mika, Wylie are Siberian Huskies adopted from the OHS by Susan Giles. Susan has a knack for taking in dogs that have been living in less than ideal conditions and ensuring that they adapt to a new and loving home. The 3 of them are just adorable and I had a chance to spend a few hours taking pictures of them at the Mush Larose event.
As soon as I arrived at the Larose Forest near Limoges, about 20 miles from Ottawa, I could feel the excitement in the air as the dogs knew exactly what was coming up...the race. As with Susan's dogs, you can see that these dogs are very well cared for and that the owners are really enabling the dogs to do what they really love doing...run. With something like 100 dogs on the site, most of them huskies, the howling was quite something. I created a slideshow of the event...this one is a bit longer then the other ones I usually produce. I wanted to make sure that I could capture as many contestants as possible so they would have a chance to see themselves in action...some of the shots even surprised me...Enjoy!
